Se Improvisation & Environment Adjustment

Also not big on Se with my typing but i will also jump on the music train for maybe some insight on Ni? Or Ti? Honestly what I do seems really Si-Ne. Who knows? Also I'm a musical novice, no real training in anything music related, the most I do is go to jam sessions or play with friends. I just like talking about music. I know it's not super related to the original post.

I am also into improvisational playing, mostly in the jazz and Blues realm. I identify a lot with what both simonemusic and mikesilb said but I differ in tons of ways. Even though a lot of what I do is creating music in the moment, be it improvising over known tunes/standards or comping or just plain making a new song up on the spot and seeing what comes out, I am very certain of where all my musical ideas come from and are going. Improvisation for me is not planned while I'm playing music, not at all, but I will say that what I practice in order to improvise better certainly is very methodical.

I rip phrases from other musicians, change them up to make them my own, learn the voicings they like to play, the rhythms they use to accompany others, figure out why what they do work, then make up my own but it's very strongly related to what I listen to. I also love music theory, applying it to analyze what I listen to it, and then find ways to use the patterns I found to help me make my own music. I learn everything from others, less so from original ideas, even if they are original. Even original songs I make are heavily inspired from countless other songs I've analyzed and learned. Most of the time it's not conscious but sometimes it is. I'm realizing this stuff doesn't make much sense now that I think about it.

I'm much better at making up strong but simple melodic lines on the spot without music in front of me in a jam setting or finding some nice voicings to play over what someone else is playing. I love reacting to and starting a new rhythm dynamic in the middle of a song. Most of me playing music and the reason I do it in the first place is playing with other people, reacting to them, trying to get them to sound better, doing some little new things in the moment because it might or might not work. Even if I suck at it, it's why I do it.

Maybe you two can relate or maybe not. I meet a lot of people with different methods for making music, some without methods and they just do it, and it's cool to hear about it. I will say I'm super jealous of those who do primarily play music straight up all in the moment, be it sight reading a piece or making up something totally brand new on the spot like simonemusic. I seriously strive to do that and hopefully I improve to the point where that becomes normal.
