One of the most distinctive things about Ni is how it will 'zone out' in the eyes. You get the sense that the person is not looking at anything in particular while staring rather directly into the middle distance, or at an anchor point. You also get the sense that the Ni user's mind is active, somewhat deep in thought.
The gaze will often dart or drift downward and to the side, usually left for some reason (probably right brained thinking).
While the Ni user usually goes still when they do this, this effect can happen while they're talking, or even while the Ni user in motion.
This signal differs from the Si gaze, in that it seems very directed at one spot or thing. The Si gaze just seems to float in the direction of what it's looking at.

heh yeh when i talk i zone out maybe 70% of the time.
i just have a hard time picking out Ji disengaging eyes from Pi sometimes, especially in Se-Ni users. i guess most of the (in)action with my eyes in that gif looks like zoning out. i just don't usually look straight down in that way to zone out, but looking closely my eyes still look fixated, no blinking, and i don't seem to 'freeze' when it happens, its more of just a rest
It's rare that Ni goes directly down. It's almost always to the side, with a little bit of down.
And then there's this clear sense that the eyes have 'turned off' in favor of what's going on in the mind.
Si eyes just appear to be floating at what they're looking at like they're processing what they're looking at internally as much as externally. They don't turn off or look away. They seem like they're out of focus and okay with that, yet still engaged. I always found this to be strange because Si seems to be looking at everything at once, even though it's Pi. Meanwhile, Se always seems to be intensely looking directly at specific things, even though it's Pe. But then, Se is more focused on taking action outwardly, where Si isn't.
