Depth Psychology
Active Imagination
What do I mean by a "spiritual experience" of a function?
The eight functions are not merely experienced as metabolic information pathways. They have -- as many aspects of our psyche do -- a metaphorical experience as well. Just as masculine and feminine biology/psychology embodies itself in the archetypes of Animus and Anima, so too the functions take embodied roles akin to what Peterson calls "sub-personalities." It is therefore fit to conceive of the "work of development" as a spiritual path to some degree -- or if one is uncomfortable with the word spiritual, then psychoanalytical.
Active imagination is the creative use of metaphor, symbolism, imagery and personification to give form to the narrative of one's mind; so as to resolve matters. For example, the cognitive dissonance felt by a disconnected polar process may be better symbolized as the ostracizing of a child within us:
We neglect parts of ourselves, and they suffer. And this suffering is most properly understood in an embodied way; as a character drama. A stoic TeSi businessman who is very militant.. will have in them a sub-personality that is affected, effeminate and cares deeply for the personhood of everything and is guided by a principle of life (Edin). They may reject this character in themselves, but it will exist nonetheless as a result of enantiodromia. It may have a voice, an opinion, and especially in the case of a J type, an ego (J) of its own.
As the book Psychological Types was first (sub)titled "The Psychology of Individuation", it is no exaggeration to say the eight functions play central roles in our life drama, our ego's journey and our path in this reality. More than being simply a passive fact about our being, it's essential to our cognition and our experience of ourselves in all personal/spiritual dimensions.
Development as a Psychological & Character Journey
A /// Say you're a TiSi... and you certainly don't identify with magical thinking or spontaneity. Still, within you an inner child will exist. Lively, silly, animated and naive. The Puer Aeternus lives inside of you as a spiritual entity, and it permeates your life in subconscious ways. This is slightly different from Ne which you may use on a day-to-day basis to speculate and figure out problems. The Puer Aeternus in you is all the libido which you as a TiNe-Si inhibit toward unbridled curiosity and exploration. Your starry-eyed child may come out of you in rare situations, when you feel no need to analyze reality so rigidly.
B /// Or say you're an NeFi, then somewhere within you will exist a spirit - a subpersonality - that wishes only for a little botanical garden or cottage to settle down in. It may not be the most prominent voice in your psyche, but it will be felt as an inner longing. It may appear to you as a little old lady, or a homey parental character in you.
C /// If you're a very self-disciplined FeNi-Fe, and believe very much in moral virtue and order... there will be a spirit in you (Ver) that is more devious and wishes to break free from your over-imposed order (J). And this spirit may find an occasion to be a trickster and come out of you in an unexpected way. You may find yourself thirsting for an adrenaline rush, taking things too far at the party, letting loose and being overtaken by the sensory.. because Ver wanted too badly to be expressed and your relationship to it had become so damaged.
These spirits are alive and they have the capacity to come out of us in moments of stress. And they can come out positively or negatively (usually negatively if they're coming out from stress). Having dialogue with them, they will reveal their desires to you and their grievances with what you are doing or not doing. They will tell you what they wish of you, and in that also the key to development.
Depth Psychology
- "Depth Psychology refers to approaches to therapy that are open to the exploration of the subtle, unconscious, and transpersonal aspects of human experience. A depth approach may include therapeutic traditions that explores the unconscious and involves the study and exploration of dreams, complexes, and archetypes." - link
Active Imagination
- "As developed by Carl Jung between 1913 and 1916, active imagination is a meditation technique wherein the contents of one's unconscious are translated into images, narrative or personified as separate entities. It can serve as a bridge between the conscious "ego" and the unconscious and includes working with dreams and the creative self via imagination or fantasy. Jung linked active imagination with the processes of alchemy in that both strive for oneness and inter-relatedness from a set of fragmented and dissociated parts. This process found expression for Jung in his Red Book." - link

Listen to all parts of you
For if you betray any part
You betray yourself
For if you betray any part
You betray yourself
What sides of you are you neglecting?
What are their names?
