I've been struggling with this topic for a while because I don't really relate to a lot of what's been written about this topic. Some people will break down lyrics and say certain songs are "ISTJ songs" or such and such band is a "INFP band". To me this makes no sense because I don't really listen to lyrics.
I don't know if this is type specific or one of my weird characteristics, but I don't really listen to lyrics or appreciate music based on artistic talent or that something sounds nice. To me it's a trigger for my imagination to enhance my day dreams. So when I say this I don't mean that I don't hear the lyrics, I do, but I don't process them. I have honestly never in my entire life looked at the lyrics of a song and thought about what it meant. What I am inclined to think about is, what the song reminds me of, so I might listen to some electronica song an it'll make me feel like I'm exploring an abandoned alien space station (or whatever, just an example). How I judge music is actually based on whether or not it generates images, day dreams, fantasies in mind. So if I don't feel anything when I listen to a song I generally don't like it, which unfortunately applies to most bands, especially popular ones like the Beatles. So for this reason I generally don't like to tell people what music I listen or really pick the music being listened to by other people. It's just a very personal experience and I know most people listen to lyrics or listen to music because they think it sounds cool, and not for the reasons I do.
Does anyone else feel this way about music? Does anyone think music is correlated with CT? Does anyone share my feelings about music or think it's type related?
I relate to some extent. What I tend to imagine are choreographies (or some other kind of performed spectacle) or a visual design of the music I'm listening to (like the art director of a film). In fact, a lot of my imagination is thought in a movie or animation format. But I also listen to music that I think sounds cool because it's the music that's going to mentally stimulate me the most. The music that has a visual attachment is the most repeatable music for me. However, I also look up for the lyrics of the music that makes me feel a certain way and I try to analyze the meaning behind those lyrics and I always try to interpret it through the feeling that firstly triggered the research. I don't know if it's type related. I can find an explanation for me because I use Ne/Si.
mh... well, i think music can be correlated with CT, like i wrote in this forum a month ago:
...music is a way to express feelings, sensations, thoughts and spirituality, if i'm an TiNe, and i made a song, the song is a product of my soul, my body, my brain and my head, is then a part of myself.
but i don't think that music is strictly correlated with musical taste, is certanly correlated with one who plays or compose one song, the enjoyment of the music is linked with your "personal standards (emotional and intellectual)" and in how much you're open minded.
So if I don't feel anything when I listen to a song I generally don't like it, which unfortunately applies to most bands, especially popular ones like the Beatles.
i can't stand them too -__- for example, they don't touch me mentally, either emotionally. But i can't deny their cultural importance (we can discuss the fact that their importance was created by the mass media that they obsessively advertised and swelled more than they actually deserved) and the influence they had in other musicians that i actually like.
Answering the question "what do you search in music?", it depends in what the musician offers to me and how i like the music estetically and emotionally. Sometimes music gives me just a mood, where i can hide, where i can vent myself, also an happier mood, why not. Other times i immagine scenarios, "trailers", and choreographies like NingenExp
