I think the way your example would work is that Ni would look at the box and just intuitively have some way that they think will work. This is because Ni has future projection from past data, and it would just think that it should work like that in a more intuitive sense. It wouldn't actually have to recall data or anything, it would just know.
I think Si would look at the box and say "it looks like (insert relatable box/memory here)". It would reach for prior tangible memory and not have a sense of knowing. If all of the memories fail, then Ne goes crazy and suggests a million things.
Although I think that an Ni user would be more inclined to trust their intuition, I think an Si user would try to rationalize how it would work (unless it looked really similar to some kind of memory). Personally I would look at how I think the mechanisms should function if there are any, etc.
This is just speculation though and I'm not sure on all of this.

L : great addendum. I would say that the efficiency of the intuitive process is not always instantaneous after the first sight of the problem, sometimes it will even takes days before a pattern seem evident. The Ni user might firstly have associations that are not effective, or just random. He will try indeed to act on them as soon as he thinks he got something, a similarity (in scheme, not in tangible memory), a synthesis than he can project to the future.
Hope the distinction is clearer this way, it is quite difficult to translate because of its pre-verbal and pre-tangible nature. I believe Jung is saying in one of his books that intuition could manifest itself in all other three functions, so he must mean something like that, a conscious anchoring in the form of a virtual memory sometimes close to Si.
Sorry to have derailed the thread

Subtler Si scowl? No eyebrow thing, but still gentle Ne-Si eyes, screwed up in concentration. (Prompted by me trying to recall the order of the elements on the periodic table. For some reason, this always trips me up.)

Heron, you have impressive control over your eyes and eyebrows. I'm kind of wondering if there is a random genetic component to this since I can't do half the stuff you do here. I just don't have that kind of control over the muscles around my eyes.
TheLogicFan the interesting thing here is that i'm not the most expressive person, it depends on the level of intimacy i have with the people around me (someone noticed that i can cool down my face in an instant if a person i don't know come in my way, even when i'm with people i know well). And apparently i'm the only one in my family who can make these kind of facial expressions, so i don't know for genetics :S (but my FiNe brother is the only who can move the ear muscles if this is relevant xD)
chaoticbrainpeppergirl don't worry for the Ni scowl... we have the "melting-hulk-investigator" scowl that can be even worse D:
My last scowl was exaggerated so that differences could be noted. I took a few pictures for what it really looks like. Most of the time, I look downward or to the side, but I took one staring at the camera. As you can see, my scowls aren't very strong.
