I ran accross this project on Kickstarter : Emotiv Insight
It can record EEG data from 5 areas in our brain, without any creepy electrodes making you look like HellRaisers. It is compatible with Android, and it seems to be able to do a lot of things, including raw EEG data access (they have an official website here if you want more information).
It may not be that affordable, though, considering how much you have to pay to support the project, but surely less than 1000$ (some people backing the project got it at a "special price" for 199$ and the constructor are still adding features, so it might rise).
The sensors are checking the following areas : AF3, AF4, T7, T8 and Pz. Be careful, these are new names for the electrode places ! Check this thread to understand what I mean.
AF3 and AF4 are quite close too Fp1 and Fp2 (respectively)
It is much less than the number of areas monitored by Dario Nardi in his works, but I wonder if this could be enough to gather information about our type.. I mean, with just Fp1 and Fp2 monitoring, there seem to be already a clear distinction between J- and P-doms (I don't know if this applies to AF3 and AF4, but hope so). Then, with adding just the three other areas, we have already unique patterns for each type (I checked with the colored brains on this page). I still think that a detailed study has to be done first, with a maximum of data all around the brain. But maybe then it will be possible to reduce the amount of data needed to determine one's type, and use one of these devices to get it. If the areas match the one required. I can't wait for the future !
Ah another thing : these devices are able to detect blinking, left or right winking, frowning, smiling, clenching (teeth ?), and surprise. This relates to visual reading, and I wonder what kind of smile it detects. Given that Fe smile and Fi smile are supposed to be linked to different brain areas... ? It's the same for frowning and P functions. Detecting blinking could be a plus to detect type, depending on the frequency.
Btw, it can be used to guide a small helicopter with the mind, and later to paint on a screen with thoughts Β°oΒ°
