neon - I have a similar issue with Se vs. Ne. I can sometimes relate more to some of the Ne themes than to the Se themes even now that I know that I am an Se lead. I didn't go this route because I really didn't see any Ne toggling in my videos after learning a bit more about Ne toggling. I do have some scowls and side looks which are probably Ni and mostly I do the locking on and the pointed Se eye toggling. I can see that. No Ne toggles for sure.
Also, I have many friends who are most probably alphas and deltas and I do lack some of their ingenuity and don't make the associations that they would make. I always saw this when playing DnD. I would never have the idea of turning a villain into pigeons. Yes, not one pigeon. Many pigeons. I would wink at the foe while someone else steals his horse or something like that, not turn him into pigeons. I do find it funny but wouldn't produce this thought on my own.
I also daydream a lot. I don't even connect my daydreams to sensations. But my daydreams are not highly complex and jumping from one thing to the other, they are pretty focused on certain themes.
I imagine lots of things too but they are mostly about me and I wouldn't say that they are a whole world with made up characters. On the other hands, I don't think all Ne users do this. This is pretty specific for more creative people and some Ne users are pretty much into technical stuff and I don't think they also have stories of Lord of the Rings complexity in their minds. I hope so because if all of them do, I feel inferior to half of humanity.
Regarding lack of attention, I completely agree and this was one of the misunderstandings that made me believe I was an Ne user. I can be deeply focused on one thing but I do not pay attention to the rest that is happening at the same time. I always got called inattentive by my parents and teachers and one of my ex coworkers specifically pointed this out to me many times, saying that I must learn to have divergent attention. Which...I did develop a bit in time, but compared to most people, it's still very bad. I basically refuse to drive because I'm afraid that my lack of divergent attention could lead to accidents. So comparing my situation to what the Se article says - heightened focus and presence and being good at sports and stunts - of course I thought I was an Ne user and not Se.
But Auburn actually explained that Se users tend to focus on one thing and then the next and are naturally not very good at divergent thinking, which makes sense ! Probably the ones who focus on driving cars at full speed do this well enough. I don't know, you also have to admit there are a lot of accidents caused by risk takers who own fancy cars with great ergonomics though. I'm sorry for saying this, I'm a horrible human being.
The other thing that I relate to are puns - I love puns, even the really stupid ones. <3 And I find lots of things funny. This might be Pe though and it's not like I'm a very funny person myself - I am more of an easily entertained person. People would probably describe me as fun but I'm not the type who always tells jokes to people. Mostly I get into really weird and absurd situations because of my lack of divergent attention, head in the clouds and awkwardness and these situations ARE funny and I do see it and tell other people about it. And they find the situations funny too...but this doesn't mean that I come up with new funny scenarios on my own. This would be more Ne, I think.
Thinking of nicknames for everyone seems like more of an Ne thing to me, hm, but I'm sure it could be done also just by using another combination of functions like maybe Se and Ni.
I don't do it. I find it very hard to find names for pets or for RPG characters. This is why I named my cat Cat. I loved Breakfast at Tiffany's (which is a pretty Se & Fi themed film if you think about it ). So, I always thought if I will have a cat, especially a stray cat from the street and we would live together, just the 2 of us, I would name her Cat and check if people see the reference. They usually don't, I'm not that glamorous and Cat is not a ginger.
So usually I have great difficulty finding names or nicknames and go for easy and evocative ones.
Your interest in perfumes seems Se to me. Playing the guitar can also be Se. Music brings you in the flow.
Hm...I can also relate more to Pe generally than to specific Se themes but, as I said, I was not encouraged to use Se that much. This could maybe be your case too?
Another thing about cultural context beside the one about religion is that in this particular moment in time escapism is much much easier since we all have internet access all the time. Memes and puns are everywhere. If you are not specifically into sports or in a group of people who climb mountains and spend time in nature every weekend or anything like this, you are much more exposed to Ne themes than to Se themes. I just go on Facebook and 90% of what I see are memes and puns and funny associations of unrelated things. I'm not seeing people in a state of presence and flow or people doing sports or stunts. Oh, there are also selfies but I'm talking about the relevant content which is memes.
And this is happening because we are very busy and life is lived very fast and people don't have time to just go out and run in the park, they need instant gratification and get it by finding cat memes.
So first - religion - at least Christianity - is a bit against Se and second - social media is more Ne than Se heavy. At least that's how I see it.
