Folks -
I've noticed an online personality test becoming increasingly popular, especially within the social media realm, that being the Memorado Personality Type Test
The brief, high-level description is as follows:
"The Memorado personality type test is similar in its approach to a personality test first developed by Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers.
It is a psychometric test designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The test is frequently used in the areas of pedagogy, group dynamics, employee training, leadership training and personal development."
I personally have a few concerns about how popular this test is becoming among family and friends as well as, per Memorado's claims, that the "test is frequently used in the areas of pedagogy, group dynamics, employee training, leadership training and personal development."
Perhaps it is simply ignorance and/or arrogance on my part, but the more I research the MBTI, the more I believe it to be an inaccurate and potentially dangerous instrument. Thus, any personality test "similar in its approach" to the MBTI also shares this potential inaccuracy and danger ('inaccurate' because I agree with this article and 'potentially dangerous' because the results focus much more on stereotypical behaviors, rather than what they claim, that the test is "designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions".)
Ultimately, I am concerned that those who take the test will have a high likelihood of being "mistyped" and walk away with a list of stereotypical behaviors and a four letter code that, depending on the individual, can define their relationships with self and others. Especially when it comes to family and friends, you feel burdened to bring up the whole topic/discussion but you realize most people have little interest in pursuing personality theory more in-depth, but for some reason, desperately cling to the results of a new test they've never taken before, sometimes even defending it.
So this thread is part "venting session"/part "what do you guys think and how do you deal with these situations and feelings...?"
