This thread is for general Jungian analyses of modern media, and how the motifs and patterns defined by Jung manifest in our present culture.
Warning: Spoilers abound! Please watch the movie first before continuing. The rest of the thread won't make sense otherwise. There are ways to watch it online.
I feel Paprika is a breathtaking masterpiece of human psychology which intertwines several psychic threads in a way that I think only CT could fully appreciate. Typologies are depicted with relative accuracy, even down to visual appearance, and psychic interplays are conveyed in a realistic form. I'll try my best to convey what I see manifested in this story.
The story centers around head mounted device called the DC-Mini, which is a dream device that allows you to enter the dreams of others. Before going mass market, the DC-Mini prototype is tried on a patient called detective Konokawa. Konakawa is quite an iconic SiFe. Personality-wise they did a good job of capturing the inertial and nostalgic worldview of Si along with the semi-silly tendency to dabble in odd things (dream exploration, internetting for his age). It's curious that his eyes are very Si-lead, with drooping outer edges... and his cheeks/mouth follow the Fe pattern during the entire film. His role in the story is the patient who has some mental blockades to work through. He's a patient of Paprika who is his dream navigator and therapist.
Paprika is by far the most interesting character - hence the movie title. Paprika is a surreal, feminine, intuitive, sensual and rather magical entity with a timeless sense of wisdom about her. She is not a literal human, but instead exists only in the dream world. From a Jungian perspective, this speaks directly to the characteristics of an archetypal entity. And in this story Paprika is a striking Anima archetype.
The NeFi as the Anima
As is typical of the anima, she becomes the guide for the male psyche, which in this case is detective Konokawa. She leads him through his psyche and into a greater understanding of himself and the unlocking of suppressed content/memories. What is more curious, however, is that Paprika is depicted as a very seelie NeFi. This is especially interesting considering Konokawa is an Si-lead type, bringing into question the presence of polarities.
As I mention elsewhere, there is a general tendency for female delta types to be personified as anima figures in European folklore, but here in Eastern fantasy we see it depicted as well. There are many scenes in which the pixie/fairy correlation is literally represented, and this flighty and free spirited quality accompanies her during the entire film.
Now on the opposite side we find Dr.Chiba. She's a straightforward and managerial personality. She has a strong self-perception as a competent, logical and stoic woman. But she's also reserved, to the point, and matter-of-fact. Her eyes are very piercing, zoned and steady. Her emotions occasionally burst out (like when she bashes on fat Tokita's lifestyle) in fits which are piercing but haughty. It's not entirely accurate, but what they're trying to go for here is the NiTe type.
What makes this personality especially curious is that the NiTe Dr.Chiba gave birth to Paprika through her work on the DC-Mini. Dr.Chiba herself does not identify with Paprika -- in many ways rejecting her qualities -- while knowing that Paprika is actually her. This speaks again to a very direct duality; Paprika is Chiba's polarity. By the end of the film, Paprika also guides Chiba into a greater sensitivity and openness to her own feelings. In this way Paprika represents both the shadow and the anima (for Chiba and Konokawa respectively)
The entire film is a threefold individuation story, with the third and greatest duality manifesting in the chaotic and destructive force of the Chairman against the creative force of Paprika. The Chairman - a yang, masculine, death/destruction archetype - is eventually consumed by the yin, feminine life-giving Paprika. Paprika is reborn as a baby and grows up through the recycling of the man, until she herself reaches maturity.
(Many other dualities can be noted, such as in the relationship between the chairman + his right-hand man and the affinity Dr.Chiba has toward the goofy and poorly-groomed genius Tokita.)
