a.k.a. "The dispositions" or "the energy states" - exact name pending
Hey guys. So the reading team and I have had a bit of discussion about this, but I wanted to also present this to the rest of the forum. As CT is still evolving and taking shape, a lot of things are slowly starting to emerge. Having started (perhaps deliberately) from the opposite side of the spectrum to MBTI, a general depreciation of letter "preferences" has been part of CT's architecture.
But now, having given proper context and footing to the objective phenomenon of types, I feel more prepared to enter this domain again but with a better head. General preferences are a real thing, but not in the way MBTI conceives them to tie into functions.
What are the General Attitudes?
The Myers Briggs is essentially a system that (in its best operation) specializes in the general attitudes (N,S,T,F,I,E), and has spent a great deal of time refining this system. The MBTI can therefore predict general attitudes with a fair degree of accuracy. If you score INFJ consistently on MBTI tests and agree with the definitions, what that means is that you have a general attitude and preference for "I" over "E", "N" over "S", "F" over "T" and Conducting(Je+Pi) over Revising(Pe+Ji).
The error that both Carl Jung and the original Myers-Briggs made is in using the general attitudes as the cornerstone of the identification of types. There is some debate about this, but it appears as though Carl Jung himself thought of the functions more as general attitudes than functions, although there is evidence of both in his use.
Are the General Attitudes Valid?
The short answer is yes. They're real things, they just aren't "your type". They reveal your modality and what direction your libido is being channeled into. And while they don't necessarily identify a core "nature", they do relay the general mode of operation a person exists within. Most of you already know what the general attitudes are, but to give a brief rundown of the basics:
The General Attitude of "N"
The general attitude of "N" or abstract perception, is one which favors the associative and correlative far beyond the static or immediately visible, remembered, or solid.
There is an affinity for a suspension into the hypothetical, the yet-to-appear, the potentially-apparent or about-to-appear. The libido is directed toward more conceptual directions which highlight the relationships between themes that run across, or are found within, objects -- rather than the objects themselves.
Whatever may divorce the self from the actual (whether actual present or actual past) is immediately magical and captivating. No qualms are felt with having the title of "daydreamer" as the N attitude so favors the merits of detached flight into imagination or potentiality, that its polarity ("S") seems all too mundane, limited, and stagnant.
The general attitude of "N" has a level of trust in the unseen and believes many of the answers to life, reality and truth lie in the pregnant soil of mystery; which it is constantly trying to reach for. When there is a general attitude of N, every thought or imagination seeks for this extra layer of meaning behind what is seen.
/// shotcomings
The general attitude of N may see deeper meaning where there isn't any, and can be subject to logical fallacies of correlation=causation. Whether it's Ne or Ni, a prioritized use of the function will lend to associations taking the driver's seat and causality is then filtered through these premonitions, suspicions or speculations.
Truth Concept: As with all the attitudes, the N attitude holds no deeper claim to the truth, but the attitude will tend to feel that life's deepest truths are only discoverable to those who imagine, dream and allow the mind to follow the intuitive sense.
The General Attitude of "S"
The general attitude of "S" is one which favors the real, observable, dependable and constant. There is a level of dismissal for that which is too divorced from actual reality, actual application or historical validity. If it does not exist here or in the past, it is -- to the S attitude -- not a part of relevant reality. Metaphors and lofty imaginings may be looked at as entertaining at best, and ultimately useless at worst.
Being a daydreamer would be an insult to this person, who would prefer to be looked at as grounded. They have a strong level of trust in their eyes and in the world as it appears, and depend upon the consistency of life's observable elements to move within it --- whether for something as simple as the enjoyment of simple life pleasures, or the construction of corporations and businesses.
And just as those with a general "N" attitude may look down upon these people for their direct relationship to reality, those with a general "S" attitude may look down upon those who dream of changing the world but can't handle the simple matters of life. To this preference, imagination is second to actuality and the historical evidence available for what works and doesn't.
/// shortcomings
The general attitude of S may be inclined to interpret life as being composed of the elements we see, and may be skeptical of highly theoretical architectures or speculations. In doing so, this attitude may restrict their own scope of reality, as thematic phenomenon are very real and the world is simultaneously a tangible thing and an evolving, subtle equation of patterns.
Truth Concept: As with all the attitudes, the S attitude holds no deeper claim to the truth, but the attitude will tend to feel that reality is found "here" and in what is experienced or has been experienced. There is a very literal appreciation for reality as it emerges and makes itself impacting to them.
The General Attitude of "T"
The general attitude of "T" is one that values the logical and dispassionate above the passionate and ethically framed. Consultation of the heart may be felt as an irrelevant thing to this preference, as decisions are felt best made in the clarity and dispassion of reason. Humanistic criteria can feel stifling to the consideration of "T".
A person with a T preference will prefer to evaluate life as a collection of components (whether abstract or concrete) that interplay with each other like clockwork, and the task is directed toward understanding this mechanical or algorithmic clockwork. To better understand this clockwork-of-life, they divorce themselves, to some degree, from their own emotions and view the situations at hand with a similar lack of emotional reading.
This may translate to a type of emotional obliviousness, whether of themselves or others (or both).
/// shortcomings
While the general attitude of T may tout itself as being more intelligible than that which makes its decisions from the influence of the emotional register, it often fails to notice how lacking its own understandings are because they fail to acknowledge the more subjective and "human" elements of reality as being relevant. For example, psychology, religion, spirituality and morality - may be depreciated by the T preference and in so doing the T person may in fact limit their own scope of overall understanding, because they choose only to evaluate the things that make themselves easiest to examine to their logical apparatus.
Truth Concept: As with all the attitudes, the T attitude holds no deeper claim to the truth, but the attitude will tend to believe that truth is to be found in reason/intellect/logic, and not in the esoteric, personal or impressionistic. Here, truth/reality is arrived at through a careful deductive process which slowly eliminates the unprovable, to leave only what is provable whether via axioms of logic or evidence.
The General Attitude of "F"
The general attitude of "F" is oppositely preoccupied with prioritizing ethics when it comes to governing life decisions, one's path and conduct. Life to this preference is about life; and this seems the most obvious fact. The quality, abundance and harmony of living beings - is the aspiration of their thoughts and actions.
This attitude depreciates dispassionate analysis, as this is akin to saying "analysis without concern for the people and lives involved." Every decision is one with ethical implications, and every living entity has an inescapable obligation to consider its impact on others as well as its own rightness of character.
As such, those with F attitudes open themselves up to the sensitivity of the emotional register and follow its ebb-and-flow toward the right course of action. There is no blockade against this subjective feeling, and while the emotional register is a separate thing, it's insights are often the genesis of a deeper contemplation of themselves or their overall trajectory in life or purpose: mission.
/// shortcomings
Those with an F attitude may fail to notice that dispassion has the ability to better inform them as to the nature of the situation at hand, which can in turn allow for a more intelligent application of morality. A tendency will exist to equate dispassion with evil because it shows lack of concern for life principles (in extreme cases: a suspicion of atheists, of science, etc).
Furthermore, the tendency to open oneself up to the emotional register too strongly can cause beliefs to emerge which are guided emotionally to an unhealthy level. These may open the way to certain personal quandaries and biases which are based more on emotional avoidances than reason, when the two are not intelligibly differentiated.
Truth Concept: As with all the attitudes, the F attitude holds no deeper claim to the truth, but the attitude will tend to feel that life is about us and about living this gift fully, honestly and soundly. The purpose of life isn't to try to reduce it down to its components from a comfortable distance (re: reductionism) but to understand it by engaging with it bravely and profoundly.
