In Chapter 19 section 2, there's an all-too-brief description of the Dabbling Theorist. But there is lots to be said about this curious iteration of NeTi. I'd like to start by introducing someone I just came across today: NeTi Cliff Stoll
I may be a little bias, but I find the energy of this subtype so refreshing.
Ok so catch this, Cliff has about a thousand Kelin bottles down underneath his house (a type of mini warehouse) and has a hand-made mini fork-lift to go and fetch them!
TED talk:
Brief analysis:
In the videos above, we see that Cliff -- while he does an enormous amount of idea-hopping -- also does a ton of historical referencing. He is fascinated with creative past inventions, like the Cura calculator, and with physical objects that carry elements of abstract meaning (like glass blowing topological structures). Here we see that his Ne's "dabbler" tendency very much enjoys playing with tangible-ish objects as much as with theoretical.
The dabbling theorist is a dabbler in both mental and physical objects (the two have little distinction, psychologically), and this is what leads to other shades like the SiTe practical dabbler or the NeFi entrepreneur as well.
In his TED talk, and other places, he talks about how: "the first time you do something it's science. the second time it's engineering. the third time it's the job of a technician. I'm a scientist. So once I do something, I wanna do something else."
This reflects Ne's novelty-driven refresh factor quite well
, driven toward the curious and the unexplored. His energy is exceedingly jumpy, as momentum oozes out of him and he can't always contain it into a structured form. Developmentally, Cliff is heavy on the Ne-Si oscillation, with the Ti-Fe oscillation being given less attention. note: His judgment functions are so unpronounced that I can't fully tell, so there's a slight chance he may be an NeFi with really flat cheek anatomy like Robin Williams. (The two types are virtually identical when the 2nd oscillation is so marginal, but I do think he's NeTi.)
We see in Cliff the more object-oriented dimension of the NeTi, where the primary motivation is some engagement with elements, shapes, objects, and concepts of the world.
